  • They took over all of Italy
  • FROM 509-264 B.C.E
  • Second Expansion
  • i am hannibal , i led the elephants across the alps
  • Rome & Carthage fought 3 major wars
  • the growth of rome threatened another great power , the city of carthage
  • 264 - 146 B.C.E.
  • Third Expansion
  • the men who killed me thought they were saving the power of senate , however several years of civil war followed
  • i Julius Caesar conquered much of Gual ( modern-day France ).
  • i ruled as a dictator before i was murdered in 44 B.C.E.
  • 145 to 44 B.C.E
  • Third Expansion
  • Rome came to rule the entire Mediterranean world
  • In the east, Rome took control over Asia Minor, Syria, and Egypt .
  • Then my grandnephew, Octavian, seized power . The senate named him Augustus, or "honored one. "
  • Rome was now an empire governed by one supreem ruler
  • this expansion began with the start of the empire , lasted utill 14 C.E.
  • i Augustus, the first emperor, added a great deal of new territory bu pushing the boarders of the empire all the way to natural boundaries, to make it easier to defend
  • Forth Expansion
  • the roman empire stretched from the island of Britain in the west to the Black Sea in the east
  • Romans signed a treaty that said ' there shall be peace between Romans and all communities of Latins as long as heaven and earth endure
  • Augustus harshly punished people for being unfaithful to their wives or husbands
  • Each period of expansion involved cost and sacrifice
  • Rome ruled over an empire that lasted 500 years.
  • in 390 B.C.E. rome nearly came to an end , a band of gauls crushed a roman army and surged iinto the city and burned most of the city
