Mathilde was born with very beautiful features, but she's poor and has no means whatsoever to be noticed.
One evening, Mathilde's husband came through the door and brought her tickets to a fancy ball. She bursted in tears and complained because she doesn't have a dress. And then asked for 400 francs in order to buy one.
Mathilde complains once again that she doesn't have any jewels, so then her husband suggests that she borrows one from her great friend, Mme. Forestier
go ask Mme. Forestier to lend you some jewels.
it annoys me not to have a single jewel, not a single stone, nothing to put on.
Mathilde actually had a very good time during the ball, even though her husband fell asleep, she danced with many other men.
After the ball, Mathilde came to realize that the necklace she had borrowed from Mme. Foresetier had been missing from her neck. It took her and her husband nearly ten years to pay it off.
After these ten years, Mathilde is finally able to ay for a replacement necklace that was worth 100,000 francs and admitted it to Mme. Forestier. Forestier then confesses that her jewel was paste and was only worth 500 francs.
