Arethusa was a huntress like Artemis. After a long day of hunting, she decided to go for a swim to cool off. She felt something in the deep ends of the water.
Alpheus, god of the river, appeared because he wanted her.
Why are you running? I am the Alpheus, god of the river. I am in love with you
I do not like you!
Alpheus chases Arethusa. She runs out of breath and cries out to Artemis for help.
Artemis turns Arethusa into a spring of water, and she makes a tunnel under the ocean for Arethusa to appear in Ortygia. However, Arethusa was still not safe.
Alpheus turned back into a river and followed her through the tunnel. It is said that his waters are still mingled with hers. If someone threw a cup in Alpheus's water it would reappear in Arethusa's well.
