Storyboard Text

  • I'm here to teach you on Sundays.
  • Ok, but warning we are living in harsh conditions.
  • I commited murder!
  • And I punched a teacher!
  • I owe a little 10 dollars
  • Dorothea Dix showed up to a prison to teach Sunday school, and was horrified to see the conditions.
  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaah
  • One of the things that shocked Dix the most was that kids who did minor crimes were jailed in the same area as adults who had committed murder.
  • The mentally ill need hospitals and cure not punishment!
  • Ok, I agree with you.
  • Dix went throughout Massachusetts going in and out of jails to see if it was like that everywhere, which it was. People were also thrown into debtors prison even if they owned under 20 dollars. Because they were locked up, they couldn't earn money to get out.
  • It was even worse for the mentally ill. Instead of being sent to hospitals to be helped, they were just thrown into a jail. If they misbehaved, they were whipped.
  • With everything Dix had gathered, she went to the Massachusetts state legislator and got the lawmakers to agree to make public asylums for the mentally ill.
  • Dix was able to convince states to no longer put people with debt into a prison and they put kinds into a special justice system. Cruel punishments like branding people with hot irons was outlawed.
