Insanity and mental health in "the Catcher in the Rye"
Hi, I'm Holden I was a student at Pency but then I flunked out. So I decided to visit some old friends and wander around New York because I don't want my parents to know I got kicked out. I met some interesting people and saw old friends all while trying to swipe a few drinks and hit on women all while drunk.
"but I'm crazy. I swear to god I am. About halfway to the bathroom, I sort of started pretending I had a bullet in my guts. Old Maurice plugged me." (Salinger, 116)
Why won't he leave me alone?
"Yes. You're drunk. Go to bed now. Where are you? Who's with you?" (Salinger, 168)
When I got drunk one night I called Sally at three in the morning to make sure I could still go over to her house on Christmas Eve and help trim the tree (Salinger, 166-167)
Insanity is when you are mentally ill and have strange thoughts or feelings that are more extreme than a normal person. Holden's mental health is deteriorated after the death of his brother which caused him to feel like he is older than he is, have dangerous thoughts, and make him feel like he lost his childhood.
During this scene Holden goes to a bar and gets drunk then starts walking to the bathroom acting like he was shot by Maurice.
In this scene holden is drunk and decides to call sally at 3 in the morning to see if he was still allowed to go over to her house on Christmas Eve.
