  • Storyboard #2 By Will Evans
  • Hate List
  • By Jennifer Brown
  • " 'We don't always have to be the losers you know?' He said smiling. 'Yes we do it who we are' 'No we don't. Not always' he argued " Pg 135
  • "For the last time, Mom, I don't want to hang out with them. I'm working on a school project. That's all. I though you wanted me to get back into school projects." Pg 221
  • Copyright C 2009 by Jennifer Brown Hachette Book Group, Inc.
  • " 'I totally see that Nick was wrong for me now,' I intoned. 'I want to start over now.'" "I said the things that would get me out. I mouthed the words they needed to hear and somehow got myself to those group sessions," Pg .181
  • Destiny Val was destined to be full of negative energy and hate. Her parents always fighting and being bullied by Christy Bruter are the origin points of Val's depression. Nobody noticed Val and because of this she turned to Nick who was also destined to be sad and destined to meet Val. Val thought discussing her issues with Nick and getting angry with him made her feel better, but deep down Val was absorbing the negativity of herself and Nick. This build up would lead to the hate list, and eventually the school shooting. Val is destined to be a negative person and she excepts this poor fate with little to no fight.
  • "I knew I was falling in love with him, this boy and his ratty clothes and bad attitude," Pg 138
  • Journey Val is faced with being falsely accused as an accomplice to a school shooting. She needs to learn what depression looks like and how to cope with it as well as social rejection. Val needs to learn how to identify and eliminate the poisonous relationships in her life. I think that Jessica Campbell trying to reach out to Val is going to help Val. Even though Val is hesitant to open up in the slightest way towards Jessica I believe she will befriend her towards the end of the book and learn how people can change and how to cope with trauma and depression. Val does agree to help Jessica plan a memorial for the victims despite her mom's reluctance. This could be the start of Val's change in character.
  • Characteristics Val is very soft spoken. She doesn't say much but when she does she chooses her words wisely and keeps many of her real thoughts to herself. Every once in a while Val blurts out her true opinion, surprising herself . She is small and weak but wise beyond her years. Val is emotionally distraught. Her head is cluttered with bottled emotions and dreary thoughts. Val quick to anger but never uses forceful actions or confrontation. She is kept to herself and afraid of opening up.
  • Temptation and Loneliness Val struggles to see the bad relationship with Nick because she has grown so accustomed to only trusting him. She does not learn how to seek help or express emotions. Valerie is tempted by the negative energy Nick gives out because she trust him 100% and look up to him. One example of this is when Val first becomes friends with Nick and likes his poor attitude. Val states that she copies this outlook on life because she feels a connection to Nick and this gloomy way of his interests her. She thinks it is all one dark joke but fails to see the blindingly obvious truth behind the situation. Val experiences extreme loneliness in school and in society because her poor reputation.
