The Salinas River drops in close to the hillside, and there is a path leading to a deep pool. George and Lennie emerge; Lennie walking behind George.
George is very upset that the bus driver dropped them off 4 miles away from the ranch they are going to work at. George reminds Lennie of their new jobs, but Lennie forgot again.
While Lennie is searching for the work-card he never had, he pulls out a dead mouse. George takes it away from Lennie, but all Lennie wanted it for was for petting it.
George explains to Lennie that they will go to their new job tomorrow, but Lennie is upset that he will just have to eat beans with no ketchup for supper.
George tells the story about the little place the will have someday. Lennie will get to tend the rabbits and they will live off the fat of the land.
George tells Lennie to look around at where they are at. He tells Lennie that if he should ever get into trouble to come back here and wait until George comes.
