Storyboard Text

  • Race is defined as a socially constructed categorization of groups of people according to genetic and biological appearances such as skintone, hair colour, and facial features
  • With the concept of race comes racism. This is the idea that some groups are more superior than others. There are two groups present in racism, particularly majority and minority groups, by Whittington-Walsh (2017). Majority groups do not come in bigger numbers, but have a more social advantage than minority groups.(Whittington-Walsh, 2017)
  • Racial Stereotyping is a system of beliefs based upon the common characteristics of members of a given nationality or ethnic group and their cultural norms, status, and society. A problem with racial stereotyping occurs in Maycomb, is that all African Americans were looked at as a whole instead of individually and Tom Robinson was guilty because of his skin colour
  • Herbert Spencer compared humans to animals and found that all species evolved by changing through the environment. He found like animals, humans will survive in their environment based on “survival of the fittest”. He believed that we evolved as a species and we were able to develop a hierarchy. He made connections with the theory “Social Darwinism”- that simpler societies must develop into complex societies and that the weak ones will perish.
  • In Harper Lee(1960) novel to Kill a Mockingbird, Jim Crow Laws was a prominent theme throughout the novel. Jim Crow Law were state and local laws that enforced the segregation of different racial groups in the Southern United States. For example, the laws famously separated the whites and the blacks from each other. There were white and coloured washrooms, buses, restaurants, churches and hospitals. MostWhites treated African Americans as if they were diseased
  • In Harper Lee(1960) novel to Kill a Mockingbird, Mrs. Dubose said, "Yes indeed, what has this world come to when a Finch goes agains this raising? I'll tell you... Your father's no better than the niggers and trash he works for!" (Pg.105). This is shown throughout the novel by Macomb residents, stereotyping Tom Robinson based on his ethnicity and scrutinizing Atticus for representing a innocent man
