The Walls family begins the book in the Midwest, and as a 3 year old Jeanette sets herself on fire and ends up in the hospital. The father, Rex, teaches the audience the "Rex Walls-style" and ditches the hospital without paying the bill. This first action packed scene was just a taste of what was to come.
The Walls family was notorious for moving around in chaos in the middle of the night in order to escape the gestapo. They moved from town to town as Rex jumped from job to job, and they barely could make it by from week to week unless dad got a good job.
The Walls family kept on moving from town to town. Sometimes they stayed in houses, other times they just passed through. The family went through stressful times, and the kids saw everything from a completely hammered drunk dad, to even Brian talking a lady from the "Green Lantern".
The family eventually had hardships and decided it was time to head east to Rex's mothers home in West Virginia. After all, the Prospector should work really well in the Appalachian Mountains, and the family could build their Glass Castle after all.
Even in West Virginia, the family still had a tough time from day to day. They lived in Erma's place until they could afford their own. The dream of the Glass Castle soon came to an end and the kids decide they want to take on NYC.
The Walls children move to the big city and end up becoming pretty successful. Soon Rex and Lori came along too and ended up getting thrown on the streets by the kids. Rex passed away and the story ends in a holiday dinner with the kids, their families, and their mom telling old stories.
