  • The Raven can symbolize death.

  • A talking  raven flies into a grieving man’s home and spouts one word which is “nevermore”. He thinks that the raven is there because of his wife’s death and it causes him to go insane.
  • Shift
  • The raven is a symbol of the grief over his wife’s death.
  • Theme
  • The attitude is depression or sadness. In stanza 17 it says,”Leave my loneliness unbroken!—quit the bust above my door! Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!” 
  • The shift the author goes from is sadness to angriness when the man couldn’t figure out why the raven was there.
  • The theme of the poem is death and grievance.
