  • Indirect characterization
  • This scene shows that Scrooge always has money and business on his mind. He does not care for others, he just cares about the success of his company.
  • "But you were always a good man of business Jacob."(628)
  • "Business! Mankind was my business!"(628)
  • Theme
  • Scrooge is beginning to feel sad and regretful of his lonely childhood. Nobody was there to care for him and even bring him home on Christmas. Scrooge is feeling the impact of regret.
  • "The school is not quite deserted. A solitary child, neglected by his friends is left there still."(634)
  • Indirect Characterization
  • This shows that Scrooge is a mean, harsh man. He is angry around his nephew on Christmas and calls Christmas a humbug. Scrooge needs to change.

  • Internal Conflict
  • "I wish I should like to be able to say a word or two to my clerk just now. That's all"(638).
  • Scrooge is starting to regret the choices he made in his past. He realizes that he treated his clerk awfully and always was watching him. Scrooge is starting to change because the first step of change is regret
  • "What's the matter? Something, I think"(637-38).
  • Symbolism
  • "Are they yours spirit?"(654).
  • The spirit symbolizes England and the boy and girl symbolize the poor people in society. This means that society needs to take care of it's problems not hide them.
  • "They are man's. And they cling to me, appealing from their fathers. The boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want"(654).
  • Theme
  • Scrooge is understanding that he needs to change. He wants to learn from this final ghost on how his future can be changed and how he can become a better man.
  • "Ghost of the Future! I fear you more than any specter I have seen. But as I know your purpose is to do me good, and as I hope to live to be another man from what I was"(657).
