We had spent so much time on the dirty crowded boats that I could barely contain my excitement when we saw that we were nearing Ellis Island.
When the boat docked we were all given numbered tags as identification.
We entered ‘The Great Hall’ and had to go through a long process which started with the ‘six-second physical’ in which they searched us for any health concerns.
You all are good.
If any were found they would make a chalk letter marking on our coats describing the sickness and send them to different quarters for further examinations.
After we made it through the physical we were told to answer 29 questions about our background, including who are you and what do you plan on doing in America?
Who are you? What do you plan on doing in America?
Some people were detained at Ellis island because of legal or medical problems. However, after many hours my family and I made it into America!
