Cortes Leaves Spain
Cortes left Spain in 1504 to become a colonist on the island of Hispaniola. After several years he moves to the island of Cuba.
While living in Cuba, Cortes impressed the governor of the colony. Eventually, Cortes was asked to lead an expedition to Mexico in 1518.
Cortes arrives in Mexico
By 1521, Cortes had conquered the native population of Mexico. He even survived a mutiny of his own men. The harsh treatment of native groups forever changed life in Mexico.
