No Witchcraft for Sale By Doris Lessing
2nd period By WIll Witt 5/1/18
The main character of this story is a man named Gideon. He is the cook to the farquars on there estate. He takes a certain fondness to there son, Teddy. This is crucial when it comes to the point where teddy is injured.
The scene takes in a farm in what is today Zimbabwe, Africa, 1956. SOme of the main characters included: The Farquars, there son Teddy, and other native workers.
The main conflict of the story is when Teddy is attack by a venomous snake and venom is spat into his eyes. WHen gideon heals teddy with natural herbs and roots and stops him from going blind. When word reaches scientists in the community, they send someone to investigate.
The locals did not reveal how Gideon save Teddy from going blind. They didn't tell the scientist, The farquars, or anyone else for the matter. They kept it a secret in order to keep what there heritage has taught them.
The Theme of the story is the culture clash between the native africans and the white settlers. This clash is shown in how the settlers try to take Gideon's formula that cured Teddy. I personal think that the story is perfect representation of feuds in america during the time that the story was written the 1950's.
