In the story Whirligig the author creates the theme of don’t drink and drive by using symbolism/irony throughout the text. This theme can be supported by the use of the drinking at the party. This shows the theme by how if Brent never went to that party he wouldn’t have killed Lea. Another example is the whirligig symbol used to show Lea. When Brent killed Lea her mother asked of one thing of Brent that he places four whirligigs of Lea and place them in the four corners of the United States. This shows the theme by how Brent wouldn’t have to place the whirligigs by not being at that party and hitting and killing Lea. This is how the author shows the theme by using symbolism/irony.
