  • Section 1 Introduction
  • People believed that they had a manifest destiny (obvious fate) to move westward. The people said that god had given them the right to the land of the west.
  • They were also not intimidated by the countries that owned land to the west.
  • Section 2 The Louisiana Territory
  • The Louisiana Territory is a territory of land owned by France. It goes from The United States to the Mexican Cession area. It was purchased by the United States for 2 to 3 cents an acre.
  • The land was purchased for a total of $15 million.
  • Section 3 Florida
  • Jackson, however, invaded Florida anyway. Jackson captured Spanish military bases. John Adams sent this message to Monroe: govern Florida properly or get out.
  • President James Monroe told Jackson that he could chase invading Seminole Indians back into Florida, however, Jackson has to leave the colony alone.
  • The Spanish left because they were afraid of war. America paid $5 million for Florida.
  • Section 4 Texas
  • However, there were rules. The settlers that came became Mexican citizens and had to join the Catholic Church. There were lots of families that came, and by 1827, there were around 300.
  • American settlement in Texas started with Moses Austin. When he died, his son took over the operation. Austin's son started a colony in Mexico's Texas.
  • That was when problems started. Each side had a lot of complaints. Texas no longer allowed Amerian Immigrants. The Alamo is the battle that gave Texas to the Americans. It lasted 12 days.
  • Section 5 Oregon Country
  • Americans were greedy, and they didn't want to share Oregon Country, they wanted it all. James Polk, the current president, signed a treaty with Great Britain that divided Oregon County into two parts.
  • In 1819, Four nations had claims on Oregon. Russia, Spain, Great Britain, and the U.S. Spain and Russia gave up their claims of Oregon. Great Britain and the U.S. agreed for a peaceful "joint occupation".
  • Lewis and Clark, as well as Jedidiah Smith all went on expeditions to explore Oregon Country.
  • Section 6 War With Mexico
  • Mexico shot some soldiers because they wanted the border to be somewhere else, and this caused Americans to go to war with Mexico.
  • The United States took New Mexico, and they didn't even fire a single shot. The United States quickly took California after capturing the General of the Mexican's army.
  • The current president, Polk, wanted to get the huge area owned by Mexico that is known as California and New Mexico.
  • In early 1848, Mexico and the U.S. signed the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Mexico gave up the land now known as the Mexican Cession, which is the vast area in California and New Mexico. The U.S. paid Mexico $15 million.
  • Polk wanted to buy the land, but Mexican officials would not even talk to him about it.
