Moctezuma II heard rumours about explorers coming to Tenochtitlan from Europe. He saw many phenomenon that led him to believe that an Aztec god was returning.
Hernan Cortes led an expedition from Spain to find Tenochtitlan. Christopher Columbus, another Spanish conquistador, also tried to find Tenochtitlan approx. 20 years earlier.
The Tlaxcalans thought that Cortes and his men were Aztecs and they hated Aztecs. So they teamed up and decided to destroy Tenochtitlan.
Along the way, Cortes and his men came across a hostile group of people called Tlaxcala, they were very hostile
Moctezuma II kindly welcomes Cortes and his men. He even gave Cortes his own palace to stay in.
Cortes and his men were very friendly to the Aztecs. This was just to gain trust from the Aztecs. They were secretly taking over Tenochtitlan, slowly destroying buildings and statues.
All out war between the Aztecs and the Spanish!!!!
