Justice and the Law
"In my country Eddie would be dead now."
"Just remember, kid, you can quicker get back a million dollars that was stole than a word that you gave away."
Marco does not fully understand the concept of justice and law in the United States so he is arguing with Alfieri on what is right and what is wrong and what is right, Marco: "In my country [Eddie] would be dead now." (2.241), Marco wants revenge. This would be perfectly acceptable in Sicily. Marco doesn't realize that America has different rules and he can't kill Eddie in revenge, which is what Alfieri is trying to explain to him
Eddie values someones "word" above anything else, this is ironic considering he calls immigration later on in the story, "Just remember, kid, you can quicker get back a million dollars that was stole than a word that you gave away." Eddie has a moral code of honor that he thinks is worth "a million dollars" . As is why he so desperately wants his word back from Marco at the end of the story
Eddie is scared at the prospect of Catherine leaving since he has taken care of her for long, he doesn't want to get abandoned by Catherine basically, "And then you'll move away. […] That's life. And you'll come visit on Sundays, then once a month, then Christmas and New Year's, finally." This is perfect evidence to prove the fact that he takes care of his family and cares for them deeply, some more than other if you know what I mean, Wink Wink.
