Afghanistan is a poor country and many people are employed as farmers. A farmer can earn ten times as much money growing opium poppies for drug trade than growing food.
The drugs are transported to UK using Iran Or turkey, the trucks can be guarded by heavily armed men, Heroin can be sold along the route, profit gained could finance groups like the taliban.
A fungus has infected 50 percent of poppies in Afghanistan. This means crops have failed. Street prices increase due to shortage.
The heroin gets back to the UK, and people get addicted, And are more tempted to commit crimes. Criminals can earn large amounts of money from this.
