  • The Nazis became the largest single party in the Reichstag. Hitler demanded to be made Chancellor, but president Hindenburg appointed Von Papen instead.

  • However, Hitler's huge Nazi party intervened under his command and the election was put to a halt.

  • Von Papen was then replaced by General Kurt von Schleicher, to which Hitler's party intervened again. Hitler demanded to be made chancellor, but von Papen opposed.

  • Anxious to regain power, von Papen came up with a political intrigue to make Hitler Chancellor, and himself the Vice-Chancellor. President Hindenburg agreed to the plan.
