In 1959 Fidel Castro came to Cuba to take charge. He was very helpful but people soon learned he was a communist so they fled the country for the U.S.
John F. Kennedy decided that the plan including the CIA to overthrow Castro was a go. It took place at the Bay of Pigs and it failed miserably- invaders were captured and Cuban people didn't rise up.
"There is an old saying that victory has 100 fathers and defeat is an orphan, I am the responsible officer in this government."
Khrushchev placed nuclear missiles on Cuba which were to be pointed at America. Kennedy didn't want to shoot first and people were worried about a WW3 but soon Russian ships left and Cuban missiles were removed.
Russia announced that bomb tests would begin again, Kennedy said that the U.S. would be doing that same. Kennedy kept telling the Russian people that we needed to work together instead of against each other, some Americans really hated this idea. Soon Khrushchev agreed to the U.S. proposal for a test-ban treaty.
“This Treaty... is particularly for our children and grandchildren, and they have no lobby in Washington”
