  • Now that the tariff has passed, European goods will be more expensive, benefiting the Northern States.
  • 1832
  • Because of that new tariff, European goods are so expensive!
  • Andrew Jackson
  • Oh yeah, I heard about that. I buy cotton from within this country. Europe has stopped buying cotton from the southern states, however.
  • Andrew Jackson
  • I am VP Calhoun, and this is wretched. This needs to be taken to Congress.
  • I hate this new tariff so much! Europe has stopped buying our cotton! We're losing money!
  • V.P. Calhoun
  • South Carolina Representative
  • I represent South Carolina, and we hereby nullify the tariff of 1828. We are losing money, and this tariff was made only to benefit the North.
  • I have a solution to your problem. I am proposing the tariff of 1832, which will reduce previous tariffs.
  • I represent South Carolina, and we feel that we reserve the right to nullify the tariffs of 1828 and 1832.
  • South Carolina Representative
  • If you send Union troops, we will secede from the United States. Our economy is failing.
  • NO! These tariffs will remain. I will send troops if needed in order to collect this tax.
  • South Carolina Representative
  • We agree. Also, we will withdraw some of our nullifications. I am happy that we were able to prevent a national crisis.
  • That's fair.
  • Henry Clay
  • My name is Henry Clay, and I have an idea for a compromise that will please everyone. It will slowly reduce the original tariff of 1828, by 10% over 8 yrs, back to where it was in 1816. Back to 20-25%.
