  • Billy and his Redbone Hounds won the competition
  • A Native American legend was told about a red fern that grew between a boy and a girl who froze to death.
  • A boy in that area named Billy worked and saved up and bought two hounds to hunt coons.
  • Sometime later, Billy and his hounds were out hunting and Old Dan was killed by a mountain lion.
  • Billy and his dogs, Old Dan and Little Ann, went hunting every day.
  • Little Ann refused to eat and starved to death.
  • Billy buried both of his dogs on the top of the highest peak of the Ozark mountain.
  • While Billy was out hunting with the Prichard boys one of them fell on his axe and died.
  • Billy didn't want to go hunting anymore because the death of the boy made him sad.
  • The money that Billy won in the hunting contest helped his family move to town so that Billy and his sisters could go to school.
  • Before he left, Billy discovered that a red fern had grown over his dogs' graves.
  • Billy's grandfather convinced him to compete in a coon hunting contest.
