Rainsford and Whitney reach a destination but not know where as Whitney states, 'Off there to the right somewhere is a large island' (Connell 60).
As Whitney is sleeping unaware Rainsford is smoking his pipe had fallen out of his mouth, "He lunged for it; a short, hoarse cry came from his lips as he realized he had reached too far and had lost his balance" (Connell 63).
Rainsford has entered the woods as he reaches quicksand and finds, "He stepped back from the quicksand a dozen feet or so... Rainsford knew he could do one of two things, he could stay where he was and wait that was suicide or he could flee." (Connell 78)
As Rainsford is running from the hounds he has no options left for him , Rainsford concludes by, "Rainsford hesitated, he heard the hounds, then he leaped out far into the sea." (Connell 80)
Rainsford has reached sea when, "General Zaroff had an exceedingly good dinner... he called better luck next time"(Connell 80)
Rainsfords hiding in the generals curtains comes out and states 'Get ready, General Zaroff' The general responds by saying 'I see, splendid! One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed' (Connell 80).
