  • When Antipholus of Syracuse turned 18, he took his servant Dromio of Syracuse on a search for his lost brother. They arrive in Ephesus the same day that Egeon arrives, looking for his lost son. Egeon is arrested for entering Ephesus and has one day to pay a thousand marks as a bail.

  • Antipholus of Syracuse sends Dromio to a local inn with their money and luggage. When he comes back, it is Dromio's twin, Dromio of Ephesus. He scolds Antipholus for being late to dinner with his wife. Antipholus denies that he has a wife, then beats Dromio for denying that he received any money.

  • Adriana, Antipholus of Ephes's wife, is fuming because her husband is late to dinner and is denying that he has a wife. Adriana and Luciana (Adriana's sister) find Antipholus and Dromio of Syracuse and convince them to dine with them. When Antipholus and Dromio of Ephesus show , they are furious that they are locked out.

  • Fuming when locked out, Antipholus of Ephesus decides to give a gold chain, meant for Adriana, to the Courtesan. Antipholus of Syracuse has fallen in love with Luciana. Luce, the kitchen maid, says that Dromio of Syracuse is her love. The men think both women are witches and book the next ship back to Syracuse.

  • Angelo the Goldsmith gives Antipholus of Syracuse the chain, instead of thy of Ephesus. He insists that he pay him later. In the streets later, Angelo sees Antipholus of Ephesus and asks for his payment. Since Antipholus of Ephesus never received the chain, he refuses to pay and gets arrested.

  • Antipholus of Syracuse is walking around town with the gold chain, when Dromio of Syracuse appears with the bail money. When the Courtesan asks for the chain, Antipholus decides she too is a witch and exits quickly. The Courtesan informs Adriana that her husband is mad.
