  • On April 12, 1861, Confederate batteries opened fire on Fort Sumter and continued for 34 hours. The civil war had just began. Union major Robert Anderson didn't shoot back for the first two hours. One soldier said, "The crashing of the shot, the bursting of the shells, the falling of the walls, and the roar of the flames, made a pandemonium of the fort."
  • On July 21, 1861, Confederates soldiers attacked on McDowell's group. The Union kept fight while the Confederates went to seek for reinforcement, later that day the rest of the soldiers came and drove the Union soldiers out.
  • On April 6, 1862, Gen. Johnston attacked the unprepared Union soldiers, by the afternoon the union had taken over and won that battle.
  • On December 11, 1862 the battle of frredricksburg was the deadliest of all the war. The Union army’s main assault against Stonewall Jackson produced initial success, and held the promise of destroying the Confederate right. Both side suffered from heavy losses totaling 9,000 soldiers in all.
  • On September 17, 1862, Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan and his Army of the Potomac confronted Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia at Sharpsburg, Maryland.Repeated Union attacks, and equally vicious Confederate counterattacks were all over the battlefield. It was the bloodiest battle in all of military history. In the end over the war neither sides won.
  • On July 1, 1863, Gen. Robert E. Lee waited for the approach of Union Gen. George Meade’s forces.Robert E. Lee led his Army of Northern Virginia in its second invasion of the North the Gettysburg Campaign.Elements of the two armies collided west and north of the town.Although the Confederates gained ground, the Union defenders still held strong positions by the end of the day.
