  • Race refers to groups of people who have differences and similarities in biological and physical traits like their skin colour and hair type. Society prefers people who are lighter skinned, and if your skin is darker you're seen as inadequate.
  • Stereotypes
  • OH Please don't hurt me
  • What? I was not going to hurt you I was just walking by
  • Social evolution and Darwinism was proposed by Herbert Spencer but stemmed from Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. This theory believed that humans evolved from apes.
  • To Kill a Mockingbird quote
  • If only he was caucasian he would be the perfect form of a man.
  • Also a racial hierarchy evolved showing that caucasian people were at the top and as the levels got lower the skin colours started to get darker.
  • To Kill a Mockingbird quote
  • Stereotypes is an oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. Also it is a symbolic division of what belongs and who are the insiders and who are the outsiders.
  • “Tom was a black- velvet Negro, not shiny, but soft black velvet. The whites of his eyes shone in his face, and when he spoke we saw flashes of his teeth. If he had been whole, he would have been a fine specimen of a man” (Chapter 19). This quote shows that people in Maycomb saw someone of colour as lesser whether they were good looking or smart they were always less than the caucasian people.
  • You know the truth, and the truth is this: some Negroes lie, some Negroes are immoral, some Negro men are not to be trusted around women—black or white (Chapter 20). In this quote they are portraying African American men as people that we need to avoid because they are violent. Also they are explaining that African American men are creatures that are immortal and this shows the amount of lack of respect African Americans had during this time in history.
  • Your honour this man right here is a liar, a cheat, and cannot be trusted no matter what!
