United Nations (1945) 50 countries formed the United Nations . The organization was intended to protect the members against aggression. They had a large body called "The General assembly"
Truman Doctirine (1947) Harry Truman asked congress for foreign aid for Turkey and Greece. Truman's support for countries that rejected communism was called the "Truman Doctrine" Congress immediately authorized more than $400 million in aid to Turkey and Greece
Marshal Plan (1947) After the war much of Western Europe was in ruins there was an economic turmoil. The U.S Secretary of state George Marshall proposed that the United States give aid to needy European countries. This program was called the "Marshall plan"
NATO formed (1949) Ten western European nations joined with the United States and Canada to form a defensive military alliance. It was called The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). If anyone attacked one of the NATO members they would be met by all member nations.
Warsaw Pact (1955) The Soviet Union perceived NATO as a threat in the protection they created their own alliance the "Warsaw Pact". Soviet Union, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania were all in the Warsaw Pact.
Space Race (1950) The United States and the Soviet Union competed on who could get to space first. After the Soviet union announced their new far traveling rocket the U.S couldnt help but feel left behind in the space race so they funnded the science program more. Later on they worked together.
