  • On June 15, 1864, the Union army, led by General Grant, tried to attack the Confederates at Petersburg, Virginia, a city near the Confederate capital Richmond.
  • Petersburg, Virginia Richmond-25 miles
  • By the 18th, however, the North was no closer to taking Petersburg. Grant instead decided to lay siege on the city.
  • Petersburg, Virginia Richmond-25 miles
  • Start digging some trenches, men!
  • After being besieged for nine months, several minor attacks, and one attack on his entire army, General Lee ordered his starving army to retreat.

  • Retreat!

  • Lee surrendered at Appomattox a week later.
