Once the night fell Grendel, the great beast, came to the castle and seen all the warriors asleep, they had just finished with their drinking. Grendel, overwhelmed with a strange feeling took 30 warriors and smashed them leaving their dreams undisturbed and going on forever.
By daybreak Grendel was back into his lair, the blood from those he killed still dripping behind him. Proud of what he had just done. While back at the castle, everyone was devastated because of what this beast had just done, he destroyed many families.
Grendel returned again that night, with a lust for blood entered into his mind by a great evil. Some tried to escape him by hiding where they slept but to no avail. Soon they figured out that distance was key.
The people in the town had learned that the only way they could survive would be is if they fled far away from Herot, away from Grendel.
Many had stayed and tried to stand up to Grendel and every single one had failed and ended up crushed. This ended up being the end of Herot for many years, all because Grendel either scared people away or killed them.
Herot was deserted for 12 winters and 12 summers before anyone dared step foot back into that village. All because the fear the great beast Grendel had caused.
