The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
Just after the turn of the century in the 1900's, a group of Serbian military operatives formed and called themselves the Black Hand. The leader, Danilo Ilic, planned to kill both the governor of Bosnia, Oskar Potiorek and heir of the imoerial throne Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
June 28 was a day of nationalistic pride in Serbia. As the people were celebrating Franz Ferdinand chose that day to inspect the Austrian troop maneuvers in the Bosnian capital, Sarajevo.
Archduke Franz Ferdinand announced the dates of his first visit well in advance. He made all of his itinerary public.
Black Hand members started to get involved in getting and smuggling guns through a clandestine tunnel from Belgrade to Sarajevo, hiding them first in a big box of sugar and then in a suitcase under a sofa at the house of the mother of one of the conspirators.
Archduke Franz Ferdinand ordered a parade through the heart of Sarajevo. The parade was to go from the train station to City Hall, for a royal welcome and the he would inspect the troops.
