The Stable Buck: Being an African American in the 1930's racism and prejudice were abundant. Despite working on the ranch with so many others Crooks is the epitome of loneliness as he is isolated from them and cannot fraternize with the white men.

Curley's Wife: Throughout the novel Curley's wife is constantly seeking out someone to talk to. Her loneliness comes from the isolation her husband gives her. Although, none of the men want to talk to her for fear of getting in trouble.
Why won't none of y'all talk to me?
Candy: The old one arm swamper also knows and fears loneliness. He envies George and Lennie for what they have and knows his time on the ranch is coming up soon. The older he becomes the more he believes he is worthless.
