Code Name Verity Wein, Elizabeth E. 2012 Zachary Thompson 4th Hour English
One of the main settings in the first 25% of Code Name Verity is a town called Stockport in England. It is a rainy, muddy town. The surroundings are a bright green. The Author is developing the setting through the use of references to the time period or events of the time such as the references to the events of WWII. "and she took me on her motorbike up the dark peak, one of the most wonderful afternoons of my life. It was winter and the sun came out only for five minutes and even then the sleet didn't stop falling- it was because the weather was forecast so unflyable that she had three days off. But for five minutes Cheshire seemed green and sparkling." pg. 7
The first 25% of the story reveals that the main character "Queenie" comes from a wealthy background. This along with her less than courageous personality hasn't given her many heroic qualities that are immediately recognizable. The only person close to her that is shown is her best friend Maddie. Maddie encourages her to be herself and became very good friends with Queen. " I was born in the middle of a grouse moor on the opening day of shooting season! I could fire a gun since I could read." pas. 65 and 66
The Main character flaw that we see in queenie right away is her apparent cowardliness. She will give up information to escape torture and is cooperating with the enemy. On the other hand she is giving them the information in a roundabout way to try to through them off. Her inner conflict is that she doesn't want to betray her friends and family. The external conflict is that she is trying to escape torture. "I wanted to be heroic and pretended that I was. I have always been good at pretending. But now I know that I am a coward." pg. 1
I believe that the man called Von Lindenburg, or V.L. by Queenie, is the antagonist. This is because he is the reason for her imprisonment, and subsequent torture. He is the one who is holding her there and it is up to him what becomes of her. "It was the first time that the accumulated damage had been on display and I wish that he would have looked at his masterpiece- at my arms particularly."
