  • In 1911, China created a republic. Yuan Shikai became president, but he tried to become emperor and died. China was divided into to camps: North was ruled by Beijing warlords, south led by Sun Yat-sen.
  • Long March, 1934
  • Student led a revolt with Nationalist and Communist ideas of bringing China back together.
  • Japanese invasion, 1937
  • Chiang Kai Shek killed many killed thousands of communists. Mao Zedong lead the communists. The nationalist army would go on to defeat the communists in battle.
  • Mao Zedong led his people on a very long march so he could rebuild communism safely outside of Nationalist control.
  • Japan invaded China in 1937 and stopped the civil war. Both the nationalists and communists agreed to both fight Japan. The Nationalists did most of the fighting and were severely weakened. The communist army got larger during the war.
