Storyboard Text

  • Pay for Continental Soldier (End of the War)
  • For your bravery, I grant you a certificate in your honor.
  • NO MONEY!?
  • Thanks?
  • Massachusetts' Debt
  • I am here to collect taxes to pay off our debt.
  • Taxes?! I got no money from the War! I'll be poor if I pay taxes!
  • August 29th in North Hampton
  • We must close the courthouse immediately!
  • Men are outside with gun and clubs!
  • As payment for the Continental Soldiers bravery and service, they were given a certificate to show that they had served in the War. This angered many, and most people were becoming poor. Most sold the certificate for money.
  • September 25 - 28th
  • Take up as much chair and space possible, men!
  • The Massachusetts Legislature was in debt, and started taxing the people in order to pay it off. Since the people that served in the army were given no money in return, they could not pay the taxes, and the legislature started to take farmers' land.
  • Shays' New Plan
  • MURDER!! MURDER! HELP!
  • On August 29th a group of angered farmers closed the Hampshire County Court of Common Pleas. They gathered weapons and threatened the courts people so they would close. As a result, no one else could go to jail.
  • The editor of the Massachusetts Centinel's Observation
  • Shays and his his 600 men devised a plan to occupy the Springfield courthouse in order to keep the Supreme Judicial Court from sitting there. They wore their Continental Army uniforms for this occasion.
  • Shays' devised a new plan to attack the new federal arsenal in Springfield. They needed a new plan because they realized they were facing an "organized militia. They plan failed because the defense opened fire on Shays and his men.
  • The editor observed that the violence of Shays' rebellion brought the federal government into existence. I do agree with this because it made it more obvious to people that the Articles were weak (power wise) and didn't work very well at all.
  • The late insurrections in the Commonwealth . . . must be considered as the cause of bringing [the federal government] into existence, at a much earlier period than would otherwise have been.
