I'm guessing that once you read the summary of Dred Scott's life and got to the portion where I refused them their manumission papers everyone automatically thought I was the bad guy. Not so.
You see, I didn't necessarily deny them their manumission papers. No. That's not at all what happened.
Mistress please give us our manumission papers
I was just on my way to go to the market when Dred and his wife came over to me frantically begging me for their manumission papers
Granted, he did offer me $300 for those papers. That part was true. But I'd specifically expressed to the Scotts that those documents were stashed away in a very secure spot and I'd be sure to give them to him as soon as I got back because I too was in a frantic rush
At this point, I really did intend to give them those papers, I just didn't have them on me at that time. And you know, I will admit, I wasn't really too fond of letting them go being as though they were the only reminder of my late husband. You know John valued Dred so much it was like we became a family
I really loved them and of course you don't want anyone you love to go. Putting all emotions aside, I still intended to give them those papers, but to my dismay, once I returned from the market they'd left. I was shocked and hurt all in that moment. I didn't know what to say, and I didn't know where to look so I just left the situation alone since there was nothing I could do about it. So there you have it, the real reason the Scotts' didn't receive those papers from me.
