  • Punctuation tells the reader where one thought ends and the next begins.
  • Exclamation Point
  • I escaped from prison and drove a stolen car 200 miles so they wouldn't find me!
  • A period is used to signal the end of a sentence or an abbreviation.
  • Comma
  • You see, I was imprisoned for a crime I did not commit.
  • A question mark is used after a question or after each part in a series of questions.
  • Semicolon
  • That is quite interesting; I have never known an escaped convict before.
  • An exclamation point shows strong emotion.
  • A comma is used to separate items in a sentence.
  • A semicolon is used to denote a pause; they are stronger than commas but weaker than periods.
