  • Gaston Means:American Scoundrel:Part 2
  •
  •
  • But it wasn't until the first world war that the money truly rolled in.In 1914 Burns had been offered by the British to investigate German spies in New York, which he accepted
  •
  • However he was also offered to investigate British activities in New York by the Germans, which he refused. But he was more than willing to give the role to Means.
  •
  • proved to be the perfect scam.Means would give fake information about the British to the Germans, and Burns would give Means fake information about the Germans to the British.Between 1914-1918 Means would take the Germans for 100,000 dollars each year as "Secret Agent E-13.All by feeding these nation's information that was totally false.
  •
  • And Gaston spent his ill-gotten gains in style. In fact he rented an entire floor of a high class New York City hotel for himself
  • It was also during this time that Gaston began inching his way into the life of wealthy, elderly socialite Maude King whom he had saved from a group of English swindlers as a private investigator.Knowing she was wealthy he quickly made her his mistress, and then gained control of her finances. While her husband had left her 400,000 dollars she sued for more and settled on 600,000 plus the interest on 400,000
  • Under the guise of "investing her money"he deposited several hundred thousand dollars directly into his own accounts in New York and Chicago
