  • Hold up! Wait a minute. States should have a say in this .
  • During the Missouri Compromise , Missouri wanted to enter as a slave state. The north wanted Maine to enter so it is balanced. The Compromise of 1850 states any slaves caught in free states were sent back to their owners.

  • The Scott family went to court to prove their freedom because their owner took them to a free state. The Supreme Court ruled the Scotts as slaves and not citizens. This case made national attention and stirred up the debate over slavery in the north and south.

  • The Northern states believed that in order to function as 1 all states needed to follow under one set of rules. However the Southern states believed in more authority.The Kansas-Nebraska Act allowed state to make their own decisions about slavery.
