  • The mouth chews the food with the molars, incisors, and pre-molars and then sends it down into the esophagus to go to the stomach. This is the first stage of both chemical and physical digestion. The food is then sent to the pancreas and liver to start early chemical digestion with enzymes.

  • The esophagus is the muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach and is basically a transport for the food.

  • The stomach receives food from the esophagus. Then, it mixes the food into chyme. The mucus lining the inside of the stomach keeps it safe from the acid that breaks down the food.

  • The chyme then travels through the small intestine and little fingerlike structures called villi absorb the nutrients from the chyme.

  • The chyme then moves on to go to the Large Intestine where water and more nutrients will be absorbed through absorption.

  • Food then goes on to the large intestine through the sphincter and becomes feces through the absorption of water. The feces then go on to the rectum and then your off to the bathroom.
