  • Does any one know how to read?
  • The first day of school! How exciting! My teacher is going to love how smart I am.
  • I DO!
  • Surely, this little girl can't read, that would be totally against my plans!
  • Scout has told Ms.Caroline she can read, but Ms.Caroline does not believe her. Children are not suppose to learn to read or write until the third grade.
  • Okay then Jean, go ahead and read the letters on the board.

  • Ms.Caroline begins to harbor a little hate for Scout because of her literacy. Scout's intelligence was something she was not prepared for, and was taught should not happen in her college days.

  • SCOUT WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! ooohhh, she's in trouble.
  • A,B,C,....and Z!
  • This is not good!
  • •Scout told Ms.Caroline that she taught herself to read. Ms.Caroline is upset because she "knows" that is not possible, and doesn't like that an unqualified person has taught Scout to read at such a young age.
  • No Mam, I guess I taught myself. Atticus don't have time for that.

  • Did your dad teach you how to read?
  • Ms.Caroline shouts at Scout to emphasize that she doesn't want Scout to learn anymore, it is almost as though she is somewhat jealous. However, Scout was not lying and she could not see herself not wanting to read. She is disheartened that her first day of school was unlike she had dreamed.

  • Don't lie. "Now tell our father to stop teaching you. It's best to begin reading with a fresh mind. You tell him I'll take over from here and try to undo the damage... Your father does not know how to teach. You can have a seat now."
  • okay
  • After school Scout sits at her tree and sulks about the events of the day. She refuses to go to school and will take up the matter with Atticus later on,but now she just continues to harbor her hatred for Ms.Caroline. She will later learn never to judge someone's actions before you put yourself in their shoes.
  • I don't want to go school anymore! I won't go back, I won't go back, I won't go back.I HATE MS.CAROLINE!!
