  • July 1948- Executive Order 9981
  • The first milestone in the Civil Rights Movement was the signing of Executive Order 9981. This made segregation and discrimination illegal in the armed forces. This was a catalyst for the movement.
  • "I hereby declare discrimination based on race, color, religion or origin to be abolished in the Armed Forces at this time."
  • Orders and acts like this sparked multiple protest groups. The most common ones were CORE, which was run by black and white students, NAACP, SCLC, which was run by DR. MLK, and SNCC. Together, these groups brought attention to many areas of weakness, and sparked change across the country.
  • Congress of Racial Equality (CORE)
  • (1) "I think it is great President Truman signed the new order. But, I don't think abolishing discrimination should stop at the armed forces."
  • (3) "I will spread the word. We will peacefully march through downtown later this week."
  • (2) "Yes, I agree. I think we have done a good job at making change in the country. What's a little more civil disobedience going to do?"
  • A major part of the Civil Rights Movement was the Brown v. Board of Education ruling. This reversed the previous "separate but equal" idea and made segregation in schools illegal. However, it would not be that simple. State governors refused to accept it, and made it extremely hard for students of color to enter certain schools.
  • "Based on our unanimous vote, the ruling of the Plessy v Ferguson case of 1896 has now been reversed.  Racial segregation in schools is now unconstitutional."
  • Brown v. Board of Education (1954)
  • One example of refusal from governors was the Little Rock Nine. These nine students were the first colored students to attend the previos all-white school. However, they didn't know they would be greeted with the National Guard at the doors who refused their entry. When President Eisenhower heard about this, he reversed their jobs, and made each guard a personal be personal security for the students.
  • Little Rock Nine
  • "It is our responsibility as residents of Montgomery, AL to refuse riding any and all bus transportation until we can sit freely wherever we want.
  • The Montgomer Bus Boycott was a result of many failed attempts to ignore the required public transportation seating rules in Montgomery, AL. This led to riots and protests led by Civil Rights leaders like Rosa Parks and Dr. MLK.
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott
  • The assassination of Dr. MLK sparked lots of corruption throughout the country. As a result, and perhaps the final step of the movement was the Civil Rights Act of 1968. Also known as the Housing Act, this made it illegal to discriminate or prohibit someone from buying, selling, renting, or financing a house based on their color.
  • "It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of one of the Civil Rights, perhaps most honorable, advocators, Dr. MLK."
  • April 1968- MLK Assassinated and Civil Rights Act of 1958
  • "On this day, April 11, 1968, the Civil Rights Act of 1968 has passed.  This prohibits discrimination regarding house financing, sales and rentals based on race, color , religion or origin.
