  • Ethos
  • I simply couldn't stand having a 100% chance of victory. I needed a new opponent that could reason. Therefore, I decided the perfect fit would be...humans!!!
  • General Zaroff, hunting humans is pure murder! You are recklessly taking the lives of innocent men. I refuse to accept the fact that you hunt humans, and I shall forever stick to hunting animals.
  • Logos
  • I hunt sailors from tramp ships, Rainsford! Lascars, blacks, Chinese, whites, mongrels. You name it, every sailor in my sight is my prey and brings joy to me.
  • Sir, what is the point of hunting animals just for the "pleasure" of it. Think about it, hunting animals can provide things such as clothing. Hunting men simply gives you a corpse to "admire" in your case?
  • Pathos
  • Every aspect of you is going against me! Your brain, woodcraft, strength, and stamina. All of these attributes will determine who comes out victorious at the end of this hunt.
  • General, let me make one thing clear. When its comes to hunting, I believe I am capable against anyone and anything. Don't think that your supreme bargaining skills are cunning at all. You better start planning my prize for when I win this faceoff!
  • In this frame Rainsford is using the rhetorical appeal of ethos because he is establishing his position of belief that Zaroff's opinion of hunting men is murder. He is strengthening his point by stating to Zaroff that he is taking the lives of innocent men, and goes on to say that he refuses to accept Zaroff's beliefs and passions of hunting.
  • In this frame, Rainsford is using the rhetorical appeal of logos because he is using his reasoning skills to explain that Zaroff is gaining nothing from hunting men. Furthermore, Rainsford goes on to explain the potential gains of hunting animals such as clothing from the fur or coat. This is all in an attempt to convince Zaroff that hunting animals is more civilized and beneficial than hunting men.
  • In this frame, Rainsford is using the rhetorical appeal of pathos because he is responding to Zaroff's attempt of convincing him to hunt. Instead of responding with fear and caution, Rainsford is speaking with supreme confidence. This may put some doubt into the mind of Zaroff and make him possibly regret his decision of asking Rainsford to hunt in the first place.
