Hi! I'm Evelyn Zhu. For Challenge Two, I spent one day paying attention to sexist and gendered language in media, conversations, social media, and stories. I recorded examples that I normally would not notice and reflected on the assumptions behind them.
I chose a storyboard format because it allowed me to show the examples as I encountered them throughout my day.

Morning: Watching TV
"All people see when they look at me is blonde hair and big boobs."
Why is a woman's appearance noticed before her intelligence?
I started noticing how women are often judged by appearance first
Пързалка: 3
Late Morning: Hanging Out With Friends
"Come on, guys!"
Wait...I said "guys" to everyone without thinking
I realized some gendered words feel normal because I hear them so often

Afternoon: Playground With My Sister
"You're a boy. Don't cry. Be brave."
Why does being a boy mean he can't cry?
Gendered language can limit boys by telling them which emotions are acceptable

Later Afternoon: Social Media Comments
Would the same behaviour be called "confident" if it came from a man?
SOOOO HOT!!
BEAUTIFUL
She's so bossy. Guys don't like girls who act like that
Like it
That's cool!!
The same behaviour can be judged differently depending on gender
Пързалка: 6
Night: Reading Cinderella Story
Why are beauty and being chosen so important to her happy ending?
"Cinderella was beautiful, gentle, and her happy ending was marrying the prince..."
Stories can teach girls what they are supposed to value

End Of Day Reflection
"you guys"
"man up"
"boys don't cry"
"bossy"
"tomboy"
"male nurse"
By the end of the day, I realized that words do more than describe people. They can reinforce ideas about how women and men are supposed to act.
My biggest difficulty was noticing some of these words because I was so used to hearing them in everyday life.

Thanks For Following My Day!
This challenge helped me understand the Module 4 idea that language reflects cultural assumptions and can reinforce gender stereotypes.
I'll definitely pay more attention to the words I use and hear from now on. Thanks for watching my first storyboard work!!
