Troy used to play baseball and during his time playing he faced a lot of racism and he thinks Corey will go through the same thing. He says, “The white man ain’t gonna let you get nowhere with that football noway”(Wilson 14). Instead of supporting he discourages Corey from going far with football

This selfishness leads to him hurting the ones close to him. Rose confronts Troy by saying, “I took all my feelings, my wants, and needs, my dreams .. and I buried them inside you”(Wilson 67). He doesn’t recognize all the sacrifices Rose has made for the family and since he’s not able to realize that or deal with his own struggles that ruins the strength in the marriage.

Troy only knows one way of living and that is through hard labor, which is why he doesn’t approve of Lyons lifestyle. When Lyons was talking to his father he said, “You can’t change me, Pop. I’m thirty four years old”(Wilson 23). Even though Troy is judging him on his lifestyle he still goes against them.
