The story starts on a warm, sunny day in June in a small village. with green grass and flowers all over. People begin to gather in the square for a yearly ritual called a lottery. Children mingle before their parents arrive and talk about trivial matters such as farming and children. Other important figures such as Mr. Summers, the man in charge of conducting the lottery, and Mr. Graves, a postmaster, have also been introduced.
