It began in 1791, French Colony of Saint Dominique.Though born into Slavery in Saint Dominique. Toussaint learned of Africa from his father.
Toussaint learned to read and write and read every book he could get his hands on.
Early Moderate revolutionaries were not willing to end slavery but did apply "Rights of Man" to all Frenchmen, Including black or those of mixed race.
We should give them some Rights/Freedom!

And so they retracted the Measure..

This betrayal triggered mass revolts in Saint Dominique.
He became known as Toussaint L'Ouverture (the one who finds an opening.)
We have successfully fought the French and invading Spanish & British.
By 1793 France was in the hands on the Jacobins, led my Maximilian Robespierre.
Let's once gain consider the issue of "equality."
Jacobins lost power & Maximilian was sent to the Guillotine, ending the Reign of Terror.Plunging Haiti into War.
They voted to end slavery, including what would soon to be known as "Haiti" (Saint Dominique)
Months later, the French (at Napoleon's orders) arrested and betrayed him. Placed him in Fort De Joux at Napoleon's orders.
By 1803, Napoleon was ready to get the island off his back & Toussaint Agreed to retire from Public Life.
Toussaint Died however.. French Forces that remained in Haiti were soon overrun by Haitian revolutionaries led by Jean-Jacques Dessalines
I DECLARE HAITI A FREE REPUBLIC IN THE NAME OF THE HAITIAN PEOPLE.
However it was Napoleon who would lose his rule and die in prison.HAITI REMAINED FREE!!!
