During his time in prison, Malcolm converted to Islam and became a devoted follower of Elijah Muhammad, leader of the Nation of Islam. Upon his release from prison in 1952, Malcolm changed his surname to "X" to symbolize rejecting his slave name and embracing his Islamic identity.
He quickly rose through the ranks of the Nation of Islam due to his eloquence and leadership skills. Malcolm was known for his incisive rhetoric and his criticism of the nonviolence preached by leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr.
