In Chapter 29, Christian convinced Hopeful to take the shortcut. As they go, it gets dark and the rain floods the area. They sleep there unknowingly, but end up being in Giant Despairs property.

Christian and Hopeful are in Giant Despairs land, which is Doubting Castle, and Giant Despair wakes them up and takes them as his prisoners. Giant Despair and Diffidence, his wife, are trying to get Christian and Hopeful to kill themselves.

It's easier to die than to live, should we listen to the giant?
It is easier to die, but we should listen to the Lord because he says "thou shall not murder".

Christian wants to die since it is easier for them than living at this point. Hopeful on the other hand, also thinks its easier, but reminds Christian that the Lord says "thou shall not murder" and that includes killing themselves. In conclusion, they end up pushing through until the next chapter.
