- Deep in the Puketoi Range there once stood a gargantuan Tortara tree and deep inside the mighty spirit Okatia lived in it.
- Okatia always wanted to see the sea. Restless and agitated he toppled the mighty Tortara and headed towards the sea.
- Okatia decimated everything that stood in her path. One day he came upon a mountain that matched his power and splendor.
- Okatia attemted to break through but the mountain resisted each blow. After many attempts, it seemed Okatia's journey ended. But his back wasn't easily broken.
- Okatia summoned all his strength and with one blow he split the mountain range in two.
- The Tararua and Ruahine Ranges were seprated, and Te Āpiti, the Manawatū Gorge, was born. Okatia raced to the sea, never to be seen again. Te Apiti stands as a reminder of his power and it's beauty is that of legend
